Canada Extends Processing for Online Temporary Visa and eTA Applications

Recently, the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada made few significant announcements with regards to processing applications for online temporary resident visa and electronic travel authorizations (eTAs).

As per the announcement, the IRCC will continue application processing for TRV and ETAs into the new year for TRVs and ETAs submitted online until January 31, 2021.

All the temporary resident visa applications along with work and study permit applications from overseas candidates have to be submitted electronically.

Exemptions for Persons with Disabilities

In case any individual is unable to submit the application electronically due to any disability, the IRCC will exempt them from submitting online application.

With effect from October 1, 2020, two groups of new applicants for temporary residency from outside of Canada will get exemption from the requirement of online submission:

  • Foreign nationals who have travel document which is issued by Canada to non-national residents, stateless persons or refugees who can't to obtain a passport or any other valid travel documents from their country of origin
  • Applicants who are under Canada's Seasonal Agricultural Workers Program

Processing TRV Applications

The IRCC will process both existing as well as new applications and will prioritize applications from those candidates who are allowed to travel as per current travel advisories.

Also, candidates who are exempted are also required to meet the eligibility criteria as per the IRPA, i.e. Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

Please note, in case you have applied before current travel restrictions and want to be considered as exempted, then it is advisable to connect with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and demonstrate that you meet exemption criteria by explaining the reason for your non-optional or non-discretionary travel purpose.

Processing eTA Applications

As per the current rules and regulations, candidates must submit online applications for Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA).

The IRCC is aiming at speeding up the processing of online eTA applications for candidates who are exempted from the travel restrictions.

Eligible ones will be invited to self-identify and submit documents to prove that they meet the exemption criteria by submitting an IRCC web form.
