Multi-Year Canada Immigration Plan from 2020 to 2022

March 24 , 2020 By Rajneesh Kumar

Multi-Year Canada Immigration Plan from 2020 to 2022

In the light of the rise in Canada's ageing population and a low birth rate, the government has tabled a plan to welcome more than a million newcomers in a span of three years for permanent residency.

The plan is proposed by the Minister of IRCC (Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship), Hon. Marco Mendicino to the House of Commons on 12th March 2020.

As per the data provided by the IRCC, currently, Canada's worker-to-retiree ratio is 4:1 and it is projected to further fall down up to 2:1 by 2035.

What IRCC is aiming at?

According to Canada's Immigration Levels Plan for 2020-2022, the IRCC is targeting to invite 341,000 new permanent residents in 2020, i.e. the same number of newcomers, who came last year and 21,000 more than the immigrants welcomed in 2018.

The immigration levels plan has outlined a target of 351,000 people in 2021 and 361,000 in 2022, though there is a possibility of a rise in the 2022 admissions target up to 390,000.

Currently, 75% of the country's population growth comes from immigrants and with this power-packed program, the number is expected to rise up to 80% by 2031.
