Canada to Ease Border Restrictions for Families

Canada is slowly and steadily trying to evolve from the global issue of Covid-19. The Canadian Government is doing everything thing to protect the safety, wellbeing, and health of Canadian citizens and residents.

Officials are working around the clock to curb the effects and spread of Covid-19.

During this critical time, Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, outlined additional actions to be taken under the Canadian Government in a briefing to the Canadian public held on May 29.

Hon. Justin Trudeau has hinted at tweaking the current Canada-U.S. border restrictions to allow immediate family members to reunite.

He made clear that the decision will be taken keeping in mind the undue hardship that many families are facing due to closed borders. But, any individual who is entering Canada needs to be quarantined for 14 days.

An excerpt from Trudeau's daily press conference reads, "We have been looking at ways of perhaps allowing close family members, children, spouses, or parents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents to be able to reunite under strict conditions through a slight modification of the directives for the Canadian Border Services Agency.”

Please note, the US-Canada border is closed to all the travels listed as non-essential since mid-March. This resulted in families being separated from each other for more than 2 months time.

Following individuals who are travelling to Canada for non-discretionary purposes are exempted from the travel restrictions, which took place on 18th March:

  • Essential workers travelling
  • Immediate family members of Canadian citizens and PR holder

As per the announcement, the exemption will allow the flow of trade and commerce, along with vital health-care services like, nurses who are living and working on opposite sides of the border. While tourists as well as cross-border visits will remain restricted.
