Canada Atlantic Immigration Pilot- Accepting Online Work Permit Applications

As per the latest announcement, the IRCC begin accepting online applications for AIP work permit with effect from August 17, 2020. While the paper applications will be accepted until 1st September 2020.

The AIP, i.e. Atlantic Immigration Pilot is a group of three federal programs and is established by Ministerial Instructions, w.e.f March 6, 2017.

The key objective of this pilot program is to attract skilled foreign workers in Atlantic Canada by testing new approaches to Canada's permanent immigration.

This pilot program offers a permanent residence pathway to immigrants who have a job offer in any one of four Atlantic provinces of Canada, including, Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia.

Eligibility Requirement for Temporary Work Permit

A foreign national who gets a job offer from an employer along with a referral letter, which is issued by any one of the Atlantic provinces, may qualify to apply Labour Market Impact Assessment ( for 1 year).

In order to qualify for a referral letter to be issued, an applicant must:

  • Get an assessment and settlement plan along with a job offer from the employer
  • Submit a confirmed commitment receipt for submitting a PR application within 90 days from the work permit application submission
  • Submit all the required documents

While, in order to qualify to apply for a 1-year long employer-specific work permit, under AIP, an applicant has to submit a work permit application online.

To Submit a Work Permit Application Online, an application must include:

  • A referral letter, which is issued by one of the Canada's Atlantic provinces, placing a request to the IRCC to issue a work permit
  • A signed commitment form as an undertaking for an application in case need a work permit to be exempted from a LMIA as a part of the Atlantic Immigration Pilot indicating that applicant will apply for PR within 90 days of submitting the application
  • An employment offer number
  • A proof of relevant work experience
