Ontario Mulls to Double its Annual PR Nomination Quota by 2022

Ontario is considering to double its annual quota for the number of permanent residency nominations it can issue through its popular PNP, i.e. Ontario Immigrants Nominee Program (OINP). The current annual nomination quota of the province of Ontario is 6,650, which is looks to increase to 13,300 by the year 2022.

Ontario to Increase its Nomination Allocation

The Immigration Minister of Ontario, Vic Fedeli, has formally requested his new federal counterpart, Marco Mendicino to raise the nomination quota of the province through a recently sent letter.

The PNPs are managed by the federal government or IRCC, which allows participating provinces and territories to nominate a fix number of Economic-Class immigration applicants for Canadian permanent residence every year. The PNP allocation is determined as per the program’s annual admissions targets, established by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

PNP Nominations in Canada

As far as the overall admission target of Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) is concerned it is 61,000 permanent residents this year, i.e. 6,000 more compared to the PNP target of last year, i.e. 55,000 admissions. Moreover, it will further rise to 67,800 next year (2020).

In the last few years, it has been observed Ontario PNP gets the biggest allocation compared to other provinces and territories participating in Provincial Nominee Program. Though, it was increased by 50 initially (total 6,650 nominations) for 2019, which further raised to 7,350 with a recent grant of 700 nominations.

OINP Nomination allocation is proving Less Compared to Labour Demands

The nomination allocation to Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) has fallen short in the last few years compared to actual labour demand in the province.

Hence, the letter to increase nominations, recommends the “collaborative development of a multi-year planning process” with an aim of increasing the OINP’s allocation twice to 13,300 by 2022. OINP’s popular Human Capital Priorities Stream has been most active this year to address targeted labour demands in Ontario’s IT sector.
